2022/11/17: Manual elimination of invasive plants begins in the Maritime-Terrestrial Galician Atlantic Islands National Park by the LIFE INSULAR project

After the work award, during November 2022, the first phase of plant IAS elimination began in the Maritime-Terrestrial Galician Atlantic Islands National Park by the LIFE INSULAR project.

The action started by the manual removal of Carpobrotus spp. from Sálvora island. Its presence is a great concern due to its high invasive potential, the difficulty of accessing the areas where it is present, and the dimensions that some of the individuals can reach (more than 200 kg), which makes its eradication and manipulation even more difficult.

The elimination of invasive plants by LIFE INSULAR rejects the use of herbicides, as it is developed in fragile Natura 2000 areas holding vulnerable and priority island ecosystems. LIFE INSULAR's strategy is exemplary and highly replicable, as it can be imitated in other highly fragile areas, or in other territories of similar characteristics.
