The Xunta of Galicia continues to develop an environmental restoration strategy on the Cíes, Ons and Sálvora Islands with the aim of improving the conservation of the natural habitats of the Maritime-Terrestrial National Park of the Atlantic Islands and strengthening their adaptation to climate change.
The Maritime-Terrestrial National Park of the Atlantic Islands of Galicia took a new step in the recovery of its terrestrial ecosystems by collecting 8,386 native seeds during the 2025 campaign.

The release took place last 21 August in the Cíes, where 525 one-month-old specimens, 85 two-month-old specimens and 56 three-month-old specimens were returned to the sea. Once on the seabed, the researchers observed how the juveniles immediately began to cover their carapace with elements from their surroundings, a natural behaviour that allows them to camouflage themselves and increase their chances of survival.
The Maritime-Terrestrial National Park of the Atlantic Islands of Galicia continues to make progress in the conservation of the plant heritage of its islands through the reproduction of native specimens and the preservation of their germplasm, the genetic material that makes it possible to conserve and reproduce the characteristic features of the plant populations of each territory.
Ons Island becomes a place for learning and action in September to better understand the presence of waste along the coastline. The volunteer program of the Maritime-Terrestrial National Park of the Atlantic Islands of Galicia, in collaboration with Chelonia, offers training sessions, marine litter sampling, and beach cleanups.
An environmental restoration action in the surroundings of Serafín Bar, on Monteagudo Island, made it possible to recover an area that functioned as a dumping site for decades. The work, carried out by the National Park team, is part of the interventions aimed at restoring degraded spaces and promoting the recovery of native vegetation.
