Areas of Action

Donegal Bay (Murvagh) SAC

Preparatory actions

Please note: Following input from detailed ecology surveys and community engagement in 2022, some project details have been changed. This will be reflected in updated management plans which have been presented at community engagement walks at the project sites and which we will share in more detail in 2023.

The following actions will be carried out on this site:

A1 Characterization and diagnosis of insular habitats. Assessment of the current situation

A2 Technical planning of concrete conservation actions

A3 Community participation regarding concrete conservation actions

A1 Ecological reviews (field and cabinet) will provide a scientific basis for planning conservation actions, including logging, so that negative impacts on rare species such as Pyrola rotundifolia can be avoided. As part of a public engagement process, information on how people use the dunes will be sought, and this information will be incorporated into the management plan so that the recreational value of the site is maintained and associated negative impacts are reduced. These actions will be carried out as part of a management planning exercise that will deliver a set of management recommendations for the 2130* fixed dunes, which will be incorporated into a Biodiversity Management Plan prepared by COILLTE for the lands of its property in Murvagh. The specific methods and measures to be included in the management plan will be finalized during consultation between local stakeholders, NPWS staff and COILLTE. These management recommendations are one of the main outcomes of the preparatory actions and will form the basis of the long-term management strategy for the site and thus contribute to the AfterLIFE plan.
