Ons Island becomes a place for learning and action in September to better understand the presence of waste along the coastline. The volunteer program of the Maritime-Terrestrial National Park of the Atlantic Islands of Galicia, in collaboration with Chelonia, offers training sessions, marine litter sampling, and beach cleanups.
The activities take place on September 19 and 20 in the Os Cans area and on September 26 and 27 at Canexol Beach. Participants receive training on how to locate, identify, and record the waste found on the beaches, with the aim of collecting data on the types of litter, the quantities, and their possible routes of arrival.
The initiative goes beyond removing waste. It also seeks to highlight the scale of a problem that affects coastal ecosystems and includes everything from large objects to small fragments that are difficult to detect.
After the training, the volunteers put their newly acquired knowledge into practice through systematic sampling and beach cleanup activities. In this way, Ons combines direct conservation with the collection of useful information to better understand the marine pollution that reaches this protected area.
