The Maritime-Terrestrial National Park of the Atlantic Islands of Galicia has carried out a new campaign to collect holm oak acorns on San Martiño Island, in the Cíes, with the aim of preserving and strengthening the genetic heritage of this species on the island. During the work, six new holm oak specimens were also georeferenced, expanding the inventory of trees present in this enclave.
The collection of seeds will allow them to be incorporated into the germplasm bank, a fundamental tool for guaranteeing the conservation of genetic material and promoting the reproduction of individuals originating from the island itself. This strategy helps to maintain the uniqueness of the island population, improving its conservation capacity and ensuring the continuity of this native species in the Cíes.
