2026/06/13: Monitoring and ringing of the sand plover in the Cíes Islands

A new monitoring and ringing action was carried out in the Maritime-Terrestrial National Park of the Atlantic Islands of Galicia for the sand plover (Charadrius alexandrinus) in the Cíes Islands, a species closely linked to the conservation of island habitats.

This action allows us to improve our knowledge about the presence, mobility, survival and behaviour of this species in the island dune systems, contributing to the assessment of its conservation status and the identification of the most appropriate management measures to promote its protection.

The sand plover is a species closely linked to coastal sands and dune systems, habitats that are particularly sensitive to human pressure, vegetation alteration, the presence of invasive species and disturbances during the breeding season. For this reason, its monitoring is a tool of great interest for assessing the ecological functionality of these ecosystems.

The conservation and restoration actions developed in LIFE INSULAR contribute to the improvement of Atlantic island habitats, favoring the recovery of native vegetation, reducing pressures on dune systems and conserving the species associated with these environments.

This type of action reinforces the project's commitment to the restoration of island habitats and the protection of biodiversity in the Atlantic Islands of Galicia National Park.
