Within the framework of the BATALLEIROS project for biodiversity, financed by the Biodiversity Foundation through the Empleaverde call, the BATA Special Employment Center, in collaboration with the Maritime-Terrestrial National Park of the Atlantic Islands of Galicia, an associated beneficiary of LIFE INSULAR, developed a training course in piloting Joëlette chairs aimed at eight people with autism spectrum disorder and/or intellectual disability.
This initiative contributes to strengthening universal accessibility and inclusive leisure in protected natural spaces, encouraging people with different abilities to actively participate in nature activities, hiking and environmental interpretation.
As part of this experience, Ada and her class from the Julio Camba School in Vilanova de Arousa were accompanied on their end-of-year excursion to the Cíes Islands, very close to the LIFE INSULAR action areas. The activity allowed the knowledge acquired in the training to be put into practice and showed the enormous social, educational and human value of this type of initiative. The experience is an example of collaboration between social entities, environmental administrations and projects aimed at the conservation of biodiversity, demonstrating that the protection of nature must also advance hand in hand with inclusion, social participation and the right of all people to enjoy natural spaces.
LIFE INSULAR embraces this type of action, which contributes to making Natura 2000 areas and National Parks more accessible, participatory and committed to a conservation model open to society.
People helping people, inclusive leisure, inclusive hiking and a National Park for all.
