Promoted by the Maritime-Terrestrial National Park of the Atlantic Islands of Galicia, beneficiary of LIFE INSULAR, researchers from the GEAAT group of UVigo have developed in recent weeks a new archaeological campaign in lands close to the action areas of LIFE INSULAR on the Island of Ons (Galicia), which has allowed to obtain new data regarding the occupation of the castro of Castelo dos Mouros in the Roman period.
The excavations carried out in these weeks have allowed to document “a large structure with three rooms”, on the outside of the castro wall. This finding allows to confirm that the occupation of this enclave in the Roman period extended along the slope that connects Castelo dos Mouros with the beach of Canexol, where previous interventions have allowed to identify remains of salting and fish factories.
These works will be continued in the autumn, with new excavation tasks and conservation and restoration work, aimed at "protecting the structures and allowing safe visits to these two new points of the site."
