2026/05/16: PLANCTON 2026. Marine litter cleanup and removal of invasive exotic flora from Ons Island PNMTIAG

The PLANCTON project (Territorial Conservation Plan), promoted by Afundación and with the participation of LIFE INSULAR, was on Ons Island, included in the Maritime-Terrestrial National Park of the Atlantic Islands of Galicia, to carry out an environmental volunteer day, during which an action to remove marine litter and eliminate invasive exotic flora species threatening the biodiversity of this protected area was undertaken.

In three hours, volunteers removed more than 10,000 plants of the invasive species known as false arnica (Helichrysum foetidum), weighing 517 kilograms. This exotic species originates from southern Africa. These types of actions aim to strengthen the resilience of the natural environment of the islands against the effects of climate change. With this initiative, Afundación once again joined the LIFE Insular project, in which the National Park participates, to support the conservation of the various habitats of the islands that form part of the Natura 2000 Network in the Atlantic.
