2025/05/31: PLANCTON 2025. Marine litter cleanup and removal of invasive exotic flora from Ons Island PNMTIAG

The PLANCTON project (Territorial Conservation Plan), promoted by Afundación and with the participation of LIFE INSULAR, organized an environmental volunteer day at various points on Ons Island. Working in two separate groups, a total of more than 80 volunteers removed almost one ton of invasive exotic plants and marine waste.

The removal of invasive exotic flora was carried out according to the instructions of the technical staff of the national park, which is currently participating in the European LIFE INSULAR project. This project aims to promote the proper conservation of the different habitats of the islands belonging to the Natura 2000 Network in the Atlantic Ocean. Its objective is also to increase the resilience of the environment as a measure of adaptation to climate change. On this occasion, the different groups of volunteers managed to remove a total of 625 kilograms of plants and shoots of Helichrysum foetidum, known as “False arnica”, originally from South Africa, which generates a large number of diaspores that are dispersed by the wind, and which rapidly colonize, especially spaces devoid of vegetation due to recent impacts.
