2026/03/31: The Galician Regional Government Strengthens the Role of Restoration in the Galician Atlantic Islands National Park

The LIFE INSULAR project has strengthened the balance between biodiversity conservation and tourism in the Maritime-Terrestrial National Park of the Galician Atlantic Islands. This was highlighted by the Regional Minister of the Environment and Climate Change of the Galician Regional Government, Ángeles Vázquez, during her visit on March 31 to assess the success of the island habitat restoration strategy implemented by the project in this archipelago.

In particular, the recovery efforts for the white crowberry (Corema album), a native species of the Galician Atlantic dunes, were emphasized. This species is highly vulnerable due to habitat destruction and plays a vital ecological role as a food source and refuge for birds and reptiles. This work has been carried out jointly by the staff of the National Park, the IBADER of the University of Santiago de Compostela, and the University of Vigo, making it possible to have propagation protocols for this species, a highly relevant advance because it provides management with technical knowledge that has already been developed, tested and transferable, which can be implemented in the future by managers and decision-makers.
