2023/05/24: European Day of Parks, «Building on our roots»

Today May 24 from the National Park of the Atlantic Islands of Galicia we also celebrate the European Day of Parks under the motto Building on our roots (Building on our roots).

European Parks Day commemorates the declaration of the first European national parks in Sweden on May 24. The Federation of Natural and National Parks of Europe (EUROPARC), which brings together almost 400 members belonging to 36 states, celebrates this anniversary. This year's motto is Building on our roots (Building on our roots), an invitation to parks and protected natural areas to explore the idea of their own heritage. During the European Day of Parks 2023 we want to celebrate this heritage, which can be both the natural heritage that we protect and the heritage that the organization itself represents. Thus, we all work together to become aware of the responsibility we have to maintain this valuable natural and cultural heritage for future generations and to discover how to build from these roots.

The first European national parks were declared in Sweden on May 24, 1909. To commemorate that day, the EUROPARC Federation, a pan-European organization created in 1973 that brings together institutions dedicated to nature conservation and protected natural areas from 38 countries, promotes since 1999 the celebration of the European Parks Day.

EUROPARC-Spain organizes various activities each year to celebrate this event and encourages all its members and all entities related to protected natural areas to launch activities to commemorate this day.

In connection with this event, the Parque Nacional das Illas Atlánticas de Galicia programmed different activities on the occasion of the celebration of this event:
